Philips Hue is super easy to set up and requires no IT expert knowledge or an electrician. It all works via a small box called the Hue Bridge, which connects to your router via a network cable. Hue then has access to your network and Internet.
This Hue Bridge provides the connection from your phone to your Hue light sources. The connection from your App to Bridgen is via Wifi, while the connection from Bridge to the light source is via ZigBee.
The advantage of ZigBee is that you do not overload your Wifi by having 50 light sources via the Wifi system, but instead running through ZigBee. In addition, the advantage of ZigBee devices is that they each extend the signal. That way, you can have a larger area covered with lighting, without having to rely on Wifi.
You can either buy a Hue Bridge separately, or a Hue Starter Kit, which includes a Bridge and light sources to start with.
Each Bridge can have up to 50 light sources installed - which is ample for most households.
