LED is an energy efficient light source

LED bulbs are an energy saving alternative to the classic incandescent bulb. There will be longer intervals between bulb replacements because LEDs have a long lifetime while managing to be more energy efficient. Without this having any impact on the quality of your lighting. As there is a big difference in the quality of LED light sources, it is a good idea to follow the EU energy label, this can guide you in the right direction.

7 buying tips

  1. Check the energy label, go for LED light sources with A+. Then you are sure to come home with an LED with good light.
  2. Look for both dimensions and base type to make sure the LED bulb fits your lamp.
  3. Consider whether your LED bulbs need to be dimmable. It will state on the packaging if the bulb is dimmable.
  4. Choose an LED with good colour rendering, i.e. an Ra index of at least 85 or 90 where colour rendering is important
  5. Check that the light output of the bulb is appropriate for your lamp and the function of the light.
  6. 470 lumens is equivalent to a 40 watt incandescent bulb. 250 cd (candela) is equivalent to a 20 watt/35* halogen spotlight.
  7. check the colour of the light: warm light at 2,700-3,300 K is similar to incandescent light. 3,300-5,000 K gives a neutral light, while above 5,000 gives a cool light, similar to daylight at midday. Colder light is not suitable for homes.

What is Kelvin?

Kelvin indicates the colour temperature of LED bulbs.

  • Golden / warm white 2500 - 3000 kelvin.
  • Warm white / white 3000 - 4500 kelvin.
  • White / daylight 4500 - 6500 kelvin.

  • LED Advantages

    5. Contains no mercury.
    6. Standard sockets - both screw and pin socket.
    7. Available in many sizes and shapes.
    8. Available with both cool and warm white light.
    9. Good for spotlights.
    10. Robust - withstands vibration.
    11. Available with both cold and warm white light.
    1. Varying quality.
    2. Large variation in quality.
    3. Available with both really good and poor colour rendering.
    4. Must be able to dissipate heat or life will be shortened.
    5. Dimmable LEDs don't always work with your current dimmer for incandescent and halogen bulbs.
    6. If you have several LEDs in the same room, you may find that they do not light up with exactly the same colour, even if they are the same type of bulb. Avoid this by buying all bulbs from the same production series.

    Watts vs. lumens

From now on, look at the light output of the bulb instead of its wattage. Light output is measured in lumens. See the table to find out which lumen you should choose to get the same amount of light as with your old incandescent bulb.

    WATT

    LUMEN

    15 w = 140 lm
    25 w = 250 lm
    40 w = 470 lm
    60 w = 800 lm
    75 w = 1050 lm
    100 w = 1520 lm
